Cross-Department Experience Becomes a Strength in Manufacturing

S.I.
Joined AMCON INC. as a New Graduate in 2009
- DepartmentTeam Leader Manufacturing Department, Production Control Unit Water and Environmental Machinery Division,
Since joining the company, Mr. S. I. has worked in several departments, including the Technical Service Department, Procurement Department, and Manufacturing Department. He currently supports on-site operations as a Team Leader in the Manufacturing Department while also leveraging the experience he has gained to solve issues that extend across departmental boundaries. We spoke with Mr. S. I., who says, “The experience I gained through departmental transfers is helping me in my current work,” about why he has continued working at AMCON INC. for so many years and what makes his work rewarding.
Seeking an Environment Where I Could Work in My Own Way
Q. Why did you join AMCON INC.?
During my job search, I mainly looked at companies involved in the water environment industry. My father worked in this field, so it had always been familiar to me since childhood. I also wanted to make broad use of what I had learned as a student, so I was interested in small- to medium-sized manufacturers where each employee could be involved in a wide range of work. Another deciding factor was my belief that, because it was a smaller company, each individual would have greater discretion and be able to work while putting their own ideas into practice.
Technical Service, Procurement, and Manufacturing—Each Experience Leads to What I Do Today
Q. Please tell us about your career so far.
After joining the company, I worked in the Technical Service Department, where I was responsible for repairing delivered equipment, responding to malfunctions, and conducting commissioning work. I was later transferred to the Procurement Department, where I handled the ordering of materials required for manufacturing, delivery schedule coordination, and the development of new suppliers. Currently, I am involved in product assembly in the Manufacturing Department while also addressing and improving issues that arise on the manufacturing floor.
I am very grateful that I was able to take the knowledge I gained in previous departments with me while experiencing new types of work. Each transfer gave me a new perspective, and I feel that every experience continues to contribute to the work I do today.

Experience Across Multiple Departments Has Become My Strength
Q. What strengths do you feel you gained by working in multiple departments?
When you work in only one department, you can only see that department’s work. However, by working in multiple departments, I have come to understand each department’s perspective and workflow.
For example, if I discover during manufacturing that a part is missing, I do not simply tell the Procurement Department that the part is unavailable. Instead, I first investigate whether the cause lies in the drawings, the procurement process, or the supplier, and then discuss the issue after identifying the likely source of the problem.
Because I can discuss the issue with a clearer understanding of the cause, the response afterward becomes much faster. I feel that the knowledge I gained in the departments I have worked in is directly helping me in my current role.
The Fascination of Seeing One Product from Many Different Perspectives
The Fascination of Seeing One Product from Many Different Perspectives
At AMCON INC., there is a complete process that takes a product from sales, design, procurement, manufacturing, and technical service through delivery to the customer and subsequent maintenance.
Among these stages, I have experienced several functions, including repairs, commissioning, procurement, and manufacturing. I find it very interesting to be able to view a single product from so many different perspectives.
The way the knowledge gained in each department connects together and contributes to my current work is what makes this job so interesting.
The People and Open Culture Are Why I Have Continued Working Here for So Long
Q. What is the reason you have continued working here for so many years?
The senior colleagues who have supported me throughout my career have had a tremendous impact on me. Through learning from them and working together, I came to feel that I wanted to continue working alongside these people.
Another reason may be that there is an environment where it is easy to take on challenges when I want to try something new. New initiatives often require changing existing ways of working, so it can take time to gain understanding and support. Even so, I have carefully communicated ideas that I believed were necessary and worked to make them a reality. One example is the production process meeting that I proposed while I was in the Procurement Department, which continues today as a forum for sharing information across departments.
Improving Manufacturing as a Whole Across Departmental Boundaries
Q. What are your goals for the future?
Currently, I work while overseeing the entire process—from design to procurement and manufacturing—through the production process meetings.
In manufacturing, not only the manufacturing stage itself but also upstream processes such as design and procurement often have a significant impact. For that reason, I place great importance on looking at the entire process and thinking, “Why did this happen?” and “What can be improved to make it better?” Going forward, I would like to continue working on improvements that make manufacturing even better.
