From No Experience to Electrical Design: An Environment Where You Can Grow Through Hands-On Experience

K.N.
Joined AMCON INC. mid-career in 2020
- DepartmentElectrical Design Team, Product Designing Department, Design and Development Unit Water and Environmental Machinery Division
Mr. K. N. is responsible for the electrical design of sludge treatment equipment. In his previous job, he worked at equipment installation sites, but because he wanted to create products that help people, he took on the challenge of electrical design despite having no prior experience. Today, he is responsible for a wide range of tasks, from design work to commissioning and on-site demonstrations. We spoke with him about the environment that enabled him to grow from a beginner and the rewards of his work.
My Desire to Take on New Challenges Was Encouraged
Q. Why did you join AMCON INC.?
In my previous job, I worked for a manufacturer of equipment used in building maintenance and was responsible for on-site installation work.
However, when I thought about work that could help people on a broader scale, the answer I arrived at was water. During my job search, I focused on water-related industries, and that is how I found AMCON INC. What ultimately convinced me was not only the company’s globally contributing business activities, but also the phrase “Challenge and Creativity” on its website. I felt it was an environment where a highly skilled, compact team gives each individual significant responsibility and allows involvement from design through to on-site work, so I decided to build my career here.
In my previous job, there were times when I felt that suggestions such as “I’d like this improved” did not fully reach the design side. That made me think that I should try contributing from the upstream design side myself, which is what motivated me to pursue design work. I was also attracted by the opportunity to make use of the knowledge I had gained in electrical studies.
Although I had no practical experience in electrical design, it was also significant that my desire to take on the challenge was genuinely acknowledged during the interview process.
An Environment Where You Can Grow Step by Step, Even Without Experience
Q. What concerns did you have before joining, and were there any surprises after joining?
Since I joined without prior experience, I was very concerned about whether I would be able to handle electrical design work.
After joining, senior employees taught me the necessary knowledge and tasks, and I was able to accompany them to job sites and gain experience step by step. I was never expected to handle everything on my own from the start, and because it was an environment where I could gradually expand what I was capable of doing, I was able to learn with confidence.
Now, I increasingly have opportunities to work with Sales and Technical Service on commissioning activities as an electrical designer and to participate in specification meetings with customers, which makes me feel how much I have grown.

The Most Rewarding Moment Is Seeing What I Designed Actually Work
Q. Please tell us about your current work and what makes it rewarding.
Currently, I am responsible for creating electrical drawings and designing control programs for sludge dewatering presses. In addition to preparing drawings, I am involved in a wide range of activities, including on-site operational checks, electrical commissioning adjustments, requirements definition, and specification reviews.
Operation data is exchanged through communications between the dewatering press control panel and the wastewater treatment control panel, and in some cases the dewatering press is remotely operated from the wastewater treatment equipment side. This work involves integration and control with various types of machinery. Because much of electricity is invisible, even a small mistake can immediately lead to problems. That is why specifications must be carefully verified and each step thoroughly checked, which is one of the challenging aspects of the job. At the same time, it is extremely rewarding when something I designed actually operates as equipment and performs exactly as the customer requested.
A Workplace Where You Can Take on Challenges in Both Design and Improvement Initiatives
Q. What do you find attractive about working at AMCON INC.?
One of the greatest attractions of electrical design at our company is the ability to be involved with a single piece of equipment all the way from design through commissioning. When I see equipment I worked on operating successfully and customers pleased with the results, I feel that I am contributing to society. Designers do not often have direct conversations with customers, but when I visit a site for commissioning and hear someone say, “You really helped us,” it provides tremendous satisfaction.
Another attractive aspect of the company is the high level of responsibility entrusted to each individual. There is a culture that welcomes improvement proposals and new initiatives and encourages people by saying, “Give it a try.” I am currently working with the Information Systems Group on operational improvements using AI. In my previous job, work was mainly carried out according to established company rules, but at AMCON INC., there are many opportunities to take initiative and challenge yourself, which makes the work even more rewarding.
Aiming to Become an Electrical Designer Who Can Oversee Entire Systems
Q. What are your goals for the future?
Going forward, I would like to further enhance my electrical design skills so that I can create designs that take into account not only dewatering presses but also the various types of equipment used throughout wastewater treatment facilities.
In recent years, the role expected of electrical designers has expanded to include areas such as IoT and communication technologies. I would like to continue actively learning new technologies while further broadening my own knowledge and technical capabilities.
