Creating an Organization Where Design Capabilities Can Be Utilized Even More Effectively

Y.K.

Joined AMCON INC. Mid-Career in 2024

  • DepartmentManager Product Designing Department, Design and Development Unit Water and Environmental Machinery Division

Drawn by the feeling that “this looks interesting,” Y. K. joined AMCON INC. Leveraging the experience he has built as a designer, he is now focused on making better use of past design assets and creating systems for information sharing. We spoke with the Product Designing Department manager, who says he enjoys improving systems and efficiency, about the appeal and rewards of working at AMCON INC.

Thinking “This Looks Interesting” Led Me to Join the Company

Q. Please tell us about your career so far and why you joined AMCON INC.

I have worked in design roles throughout my career since graduating. I initially designed pumps and later became involved in designing various types of equipment that utilize pump technology, including filtration systems, vacuum systems, and high-pressure coolant supply units. Rather than specializing in a single field, my career has involved a wide range of products.

When changing jobs, I was not particularly focused on a specific industry; instead, I looked for opportunities in design. During the selection process at AMCON INC., I became very interested in the structure of the products. In particular, the cylinder structure of the sludge dewatering press made me wonder what design elements it was built upon, and as a designer I genuinely felt it looked fascinating.
Another deciding factor was the company’s willingness to actively adopt new initiatives and the growth potential I saw in its future.

Creating Systems That Enable Designers to Perform at Their Best

Q. Please tell us about your current work and responsibilities.

Currently, as Group Manager of the Product Designing Department, I oversee the department responsible for designing customer orders.
Although I still perform design work myself, my primary role is managing the group and improving design operations. I review design processes and information-sharing methods to create a more efficient design environment.

While our members possess highly advanced design skills, there were areas where past design assets were not being fully utilized.
For example, previous drawings and documents were difficult to locate, resulting in similar designs being recreated from scratch.
Ideally, work should progress more efficiently by leveraging accumulated design knowledge. We are currently organizing design information and building sharing systems so designers can focus on their core responsibilities.

The Reward Comes from Improving Systems

Q. What do you find rewarding about this work?

I have always enjoyed thinking about how work can be carried out more efficiently.
AMCON INC. has a long history, so every current process has a reason behind it. I investigate those backgrounds and speak with colleagues while considering how things can be improved.
I find the process of reviewing drawings and parts lists and improving systems very interesting.
Another attraction is how cooperative everyone is. I believe the culture of willingly sharing information is one of AMCON INC.’s greatest strengths.

The Strength of Water Infrastructure and a Leading Niche Product

Q. How do you view AMCON INC.’s future potential?

First, I believe water infrastructure itself is an extremely stable market. Water treatment is essential to society, and within that field, our sludge dewatering press is a top-level product in its niche.
The strength of the product itself is a major attraction.
The company culture is also distinctive. Employees are not overly attached to traditional methods and are open to new approaches and external ideas.
The company’s direction toward growth is clear, and I believe the combination of this culture and our business strengths will create even greater opportunities in the future.

People Who Can Bridge Change Will Succeed

Q. What kind of people do you think can succeed at AMCON INC.?

Design skills are important, of course, but I also believe successful people are those who can embrace change.
There are valuable aspects of existing methods, as well as areas that should be reconsidered. It is important to understand current practices while introducing new approaches and effectively connecting the two.
People who can drive improvements in ways that suit actual workplace conditions will be able to excel in this environment.
